In real life, I’m a stage manager in Boston. Currently, I’m working on a great show written and performed by six young people.

Set in the not-so-distant-future, ARTiculation follows the journey of six Boston poets as they weave their way through the vast jungles of their own imaginations. Armed with only words, this young diverse ensemble provides a mosaic of life, love, youth, religion and art set to a thundering mix of urban poetics and dynamic live theatre (more).

ARTiculation runs until January 24th.

My four-and-a-half-year-old sons are third-generation Americans of color.  They run around at reckless speeds blissfully unaware that their lives are filled with anything other than endless possibility.  They will not know of a time in which what happened yesterday was a big deal.  And that is good.

Last night, after returning home in the middle of the night from celebrating, Meena and I went to the bedside of each sleeping boy.  I kneeled, caressed their hair, kissed them gently, and whispered in their ears, “Tonight, something very important happened.  Barack Obama was elected the first minority President.  Martin Luther King, Jr. is smiling down from heaven because his dream is coming closer to reality.  You can contribute anything you want to this country–and this world.  You can be anything you want to be.  Do you understand?”

Meena and I smiled at each other in wonder as one of our boys, Karthik, with his eyes still closed, from the depths of sleep, whispered back, “Yes.”

My heart is full of hope that better days are ahead for us all.

A woman in Billings MT was arrested yesterday at a rally for Barack Obama.  She and her 6 week old baby were tackled by the secret service for attempting to lick Mr. Obama.

Here is President-Elect Obama (hooray) holding our son 6 week old son George William Bentler at a primary rally in Billings, MT in May 2008.  I made sure to inform the Senator that he was named for my dad (David George) and my brother (William) – NOT the President.  The [second] pic shows the Senators reaction to that statement.  The [third] pic was the cover of the Billings Gazette the next day. The [first] pic is what Reuters ran – I found it on the Internet!  UGH!  He was handing Geo back and I was saying “Thank You”.  The photographer just caught the thhhhhh part.
